Junto
October 2022
It's hard not to read into it when disconnected topics are brought together and connected. Recently for me, that was David Foster Wallace.
Jocelyn and I watched a biopic about him on a whim after scrolling through Netflix. He was then mentioned in the book I was reading, Recapture the Rapture. His ideas connected with a conversation Jocelyn and I had about a Brené Brown book on shame and showing up authentically. While traveling I checked out the audio version of Wallace's book, Brief Interviews with Hideous Men, where two of his stories resonated with me. I have been wrestling with parts of myself I'm not particularly proud of. His stories depicted this struggle in a way that made this wrestle not feel so lonely, or monstrous.
From there I finally listened to this month's video, This is Water. Wallace's commencement speech. I've listened to it four times since.

The ideas from This is Water could connect with everything we've discussed this year.
Here are some questions I'd like to discuss at this month's Junto:
I was surprised at the connection about the difficulty of making decisions that feel high stakes when in reality the stakes aren't that high.
Here are some questions I'd like to discuss at this month's Junto:
- What is your default/unconscious setting?
- What helps you become conscious of the water?
- How do you remember “this is water”?
- What do you worship?
- Where do your choices land?
- What are you choosing?
- What are you deciding on?
- What are you choosing to think about?
