Junto
May 2022
May is the month of the year that slips away from me. I lose grip on what I set out to accomplish.
When this happens I give myself two choices:
I’ve realized the duality of this choice stems from feeling overwhelmed.
That uncertainty is unsettling. This uncertainty pushes me to extreme options, blind to other options.
For May I want to talk about this uncertainty, what it feels like for each of us, how we react, and the tactics that work to pull us out of it.
I stumbled across this interview with Rick Rubin giving advice to young people.
When this happens I give myself two choices:
- Pick up the pieces and muscle through.
- Forget about all of it.
I’ve realized the duality of this choice stems from feeling overwhelmed.
- The results of the projects aren’t what I expected.
- I’ve had to adjust expectation
- Now I’m unsure how the work is going to pan out.

There are a couple of things that I’ve pulled from this.
Part of the overwhelm I feel at this point of the year is because I’m trying to fit into others' expectations.
I am curious about taking this tactic of using myself as the audience in my approach to accomplishing my goals.
We’re scheduled to chat on Wednesday, May 18, at 7:30 PST.

- We are all artists in that we create things. We don’t all produce hit records or masterpieces. The process I go through to help students choose where to go to college, or how I lead an admissions office is similar. Even an approach to parenting I’d consider creative work.
- I am the audience for that creative work. When I try and meet others' needs, and create work for others, it never works. My best work is when I lean into the problem and use the solution that works best for me. Ironically, that’s also when others tend to gravitate toward my solution.

In preparation for the discussion:
- Share a time when you felt uncertain and overwhelmed.
- How does it manifest physically and emotionally?
- What was your observable reaction?
- What tactics worked to get through it?
- How do you see yourself as an artist?
- What creative work do you do?
- When has your solution connected with others?

One Daiquiri to Rule Them AllHappy Cinco de Mayo! I found this daiquiri recipe a couple of years ago and found it convenient to have in the freezer over the summer months.
In a mason jar add 5.25* oz of sugar. Pour 5.25 oz of boiling water. With the lid on, shake to dissolve the sugar. Please use a cloth to hold the jar. Boiling water is HOT!! After it's dissolved add the citrus and then the rum. Put the lid back on and shake again. (It won't be as hot this time). Leave the jar in the freezer for at least 6 hours before consuming. * I use a scale when I mix drinks. I like the precision and the consistency. |
